Free to be fun

Sounds like a slogan from the sixties, doesn’t it?  But it’s the freedom I’m feeling most grateful for today.

Don’t get me wrong–there are lots of super-serious freedoms I’m thankful for, as well.  And I know the sacrifices they require, too, as I’ve had servicemen in my family in every generation and almost every war for the last hundred years, including my baby brother’s most recent tours.  But being free to be fun means I get to embrace my sense of adventure, and love life without apologizing.  I get to do more than just survive–I can choose to be happy, too.

And I get to define my own version of what that means–even if it might be some level of h*ll for you.  I can have a live-in feathered lady for two months, and clean up her poo, too!

That’s one version of fun for me.  Indulgence as filtered through a chicken spa–ahh, feel the bliss!

As a writer I get to explore all kinds of fun and funny, and call it research.  Like the time I made a video about a strawberry man,

the time I sat in on a lecture about the fine-art of pumpkin carving,

the hours I’ve spent peering through big telescopes and oggling the universe,

and the hundred and one times I’ve taken the opportunity to chat with folks who lead interesting lives–including those who’s idea of fun is wearing a handmade puppet while walking on stilts in a parade.

I’m grateful that my freedom means I get to embrace life and have fun living it.  So here’s wishing you a fun-filled, firework-popping Fourth and the freedom to smile while you’re at it!
